Seattle Ring, August 2009

SEATTLE OPERA MISSION STATEMENT: Seattle Opera strives to produce musically extraordinary, theatrically compelling operas, employing uniformly high-quality casts, dramatically aware conductors, and innovative yet textually concerned directors and designers. By continuing our emphasis on the work of Richard Wagner and by achieving national and international recognition for the quality of all of our performances, Seattle Opera commits itself to advancing the cultural life of the Pacific Northwest.

Seattle Opera more than fulfills its mission. Its regular Ring productions bring people in from every state and dozens of countries. Everyone owes it to him/herself to experience a Seattle Ring at least once in this life time.

Seattle Ring Itinerary:

Monday, August 24th
  • Arrival
  • Shuttle to hotel
  • Dinner Cruise: Royal Oddysey. Enjoy a relaxing harbour cruise while dining on the finest foods. Meet your fellow tour partners.
Tuesday, August 25th
  • Breakfast included
  • 10:00am - 1:00pm - Perry Lorenzo: All you ever wanted to know about Das Rhinegold. Perry Lorenzo, Director of Education, is regarded as one of the world's pre-eminent authorities on Richard Wagner. His presentations are always informative, relevant, and interspersed with musical examples. Perry prepares us to experience opera at another level, and his presentations are helpful for neophytes as well as opera enthusiasts. Ne plus ultra.
  • 5:30pm - Pre Opera talk with Jonathan Dean. Jon, Perry's protégé, has an extensive background in Wagner and other composers. Jon has supplied subtitles to Seattle Opera for this Ring, as well as for over 50 other operas, so he is intimately acquainted with opera. Jon also takes opera to the public schools and helps Seattle nourish a new generation of opera lovers.
  • 7:00pm - Das Rhinegold
  • Apres opera discussion at hotel with wine and cheese. For those, like me, who are both exhausted (from catharsis) and euphoric (from the rapturous music), discussing the nuances of the opera with other aficionados is the perfect end to a perfect evening.
Wednesday, August 26th
  • Breakfast included
  • 10:00am - 1:00pm - Perry Lorenzo: All you ever wanted to know about Die Walkure
  • 4:30pm - Pre Opera talk with Jonathan Dean

Returning to Seattle, you can choose to return to the hotel, or perhaps to Pike's Market or one of the many seafood restaurants on the water.

  • 12:00pm - 2:00pm - Brunch at the Space Needle. Enjoy consistently excellent food while enjoying the best view of Seattle.
  • 8:00pm - das Barbeque - Das Barbeque is a musical comedy, commissioned by Seattle Opera. Its mandate was to portray the entire Ring Cycle in two hours using four cast members. Das Barbeque was successful in meeting this criteria. This musical adds another depth of meaning to the characters and situations in the Ring, and some of the songs are truly remarkable. Das Barbeque also had a successful run on Broadway. Not to be missed.
