REVIEW OF CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY RING, September 2006
Bryan Magee states that Wagner’s works are disturbing because they plunge us through myth and music, deep into ourselves, and we discover primitive, frightening, vindictive and erotic feelings that we have collectively suppressed. It takes a brave person to experience a Ring.
And it takes an even braver person to experience a Ring in depth. To add a new level of knowledge and feeling to this Ring, Valhalla Opera Tours brought its own private Ring expert to help us explore the Ring. Jonathan Dean, Education Associate at Seattle Opera, knows the Ring intimately, having done the surtitles for these operas. Before and after each opera, our little group gathered to focus on the opera de jour—history, myth, Wagner, Greeks, Edda, interpretations, meanings, music and words. Amiable hours were spent learning, defending, opening up, feeling, exploring. Thanks Jonathan for a job well done.
